Hill's Acres Nubians & Green Gardens

Green Gardens and Hill’s Acres History

We have been raising goats for several years. I joined the ADGA in 1994 but had grade goats before that. We started with an Angora/Nubian cross, and then to keep her company borrowed a grade Nubian who had just kidded but had lost her babies. I was hooked; I loved the goats’ personalities and Benny and I really enjoyed the delicious milk a. We then bought our first bottle kids who where Alpine/Nubian crosses. After acquiring a few more crosses, we started buying registered Alpines, then slowly adding registered Nubians. About this time the Boer craze started and we jumped into Boer goat business, learning about AI, embryo flushes and transplants, so of course we had to have the recept does added to the growing herd. Before we knew it we were up to about 130 goats while working full time jobs. The decision was made to just keep the dairy goats so we sold out of all the Boers. Still the numbers were too large so after several months we thinned out the recorded grades and the one Toggenburg. Soon the numbers increased again and we were not happy with the show quality or the milking records of the Alpines and Nubians that we owned. At this point a very good friend, Teresa Wade, told me that if I thinned down to just one breed and cut my numbers way down, she would help me obtain the quality dairy goat that we desired. It was a hard decision on which breed to cull but because the Alpines tended to be more aggressive to each other and because I just like the Nubians, we sold the Alpines in 2001 and 2002.

Without my knowledge, Benny had made arrangements with Teresa to purchase of a couple of kids. So in February of 2001 we flew to Washington to visit Hill’s Acres. We had a great time with Teresa and Don helping them build a picket fence (see picture below of mailbox and fence) and also traveling by boat to Victory Canada for a couple of days. We were very impressed with the quality of the Hill’s Acres girls and brought two kids home with us. Then in July we met them in Nebraska on their way to ADGA Nationals in Massachusetts, in order to add GCH Hill’s-Acres Beauquet and Old*Glory Lucky Raffle Winner to our herd. In July of 2002 we went to ADGA Nationals in Pueblo Colorado where Beauquet placed first place 4 year old milker and first place udder in that class of 40.

Never in my wildest dreams did I ever think I would own such a beautiful doe and have Don and Teresa Wade to thank for it. I am ever grateful to them for selling Beauquet to us and for their great breeding program that produces such beautiful Nubians. They have worked very hard to produce such quality and that was proven by their huge wins at the 2002 ADGA Nationals.

In 2003 we purchased the Hill’s Acres Herd from Don and Teresa Wade. It was a difficult decision for Don and Teresa to sell but because of a planned move Washington to Idaho and because of the long collection tours for Bio-Genics LTD (www.biogenics.com) they decided they could not maintain the herd so decided to sell. Benny and I are very thankful for the opportunity to add Hill’s Acres to our family of Nubians. Thank you again Don and Teresa.

Included in the above purchase was the Hill’s Acres name. I was the owner listed for Green Gardens so Benny joined ADGA in 2002 as Hill’s Acres and that is why we are TWO HERDS, ONE FAMILY. For more information on the history of Hill’s Acres go to www.hillsacresnubians.com.

JUST FOR FUN!
BELOW IS A SHORT STORY I WROTE.

A LONG WINTER’S JOURNEY
It was a long journey that began in January 2003 in Everett, Washington, our birthplace. There were twenty-one on us girls, nine of us were pregnant; two of us were still making milk; and eight of us were less than one year old. We had wonderful Caretakers. We always had plenty of food and water, our hoofs were trimmed regularly, and someone was there for us when we kidded. We didn’t mind producing lots of delicious milk for them, it only seem right after the good home the Caretakers provided for us.

Then in the spring of every year, we never really understood why, the Caretakers would bath us, clip us (that was nice when the weather was worming up to have our winter coats shaved off) but we still didn’t like all the fuss the Caretakers made over us. We were content to eat our grain and hay, graze a little, chew our cuds and produce milk. However shortly after all this fuss with baths and clipping, some of us were loaded into a trailer where we road for several hours to arrive at strange place with others of our kind and their Caretakers. Then the next day, more fussing over us and we were then be led around in a ring with our heads held high while another Caretaker watch us in the ring, and come over and examined us and then put us all in a crazy different order. We all thought this game a little strange but we humored our Caretaker and tried to look our best. After that we were loaded back into the trailer for another long ride only to arrive back home. This is what we had all known and expected each year.

Then one day in January, we were all loaded up, we had not been bathed or clipped, it was the wrong time of year for that. This journey was a very long but we all kept each other warm, wondering what kind of game the Caretaker was up to now. Then our Caretaker unloaded us and our stuff into another Caretaker’s trailer and we were off again with still a long way to go. Both trailers had been boarded up so that the cold wind would not be blowing on us. The new Caretaker was very good to us but we did not understand what was going on.

We finally arrived in another land called Norman, Oklahoma and were put in pens with just our groups together so we did not have to challenge the others of our kind that were already living here. We had seen these Caretakers before but were still nervous about how they would treat us but we soon realized that they were going to provide for us very well. The others of our kind would watch for the Caretaker to come out of the house and would call out for him and he feed them and water them and would feed and water us. We soon settled in, were very thankful we had grown a thick winter coat because that winter was very cold especially for us because we were not accustomed to the climate in this new land.

Well, spring came, several of us had kidded and guess what, these Caretakers, bathed and clipped us and took us for short weekend trips to play that same silly game that our first Caretaker played. Then summer came and was it ever hot, many days over 100 degrees, we were not used to that kind of heat, but we are settling into our new environment and are content to eat our grain and hay, graze a little, chew our cuds and produce our delicious milk. Fall is coming and the weather is changing again. We are flirting with the bucks again and are ready to produce some more beautiful kids.

Our first Caretakers made sure that were had another good home and we are happy with our second Caretakers. Who are we? We are the Hill’s Acres Nubians and Don and Teresa Wade were our first Caretakers. We moved in with Green Gardens Nubians and our new Caretakers are Benny and Pam Green.
