| We have been raising goats for several years. I joined the ADGA in 1994 but had grade goats before that. We started with an Angora/Nubian cross, and then to keep her company borrowed a grade Nubian who had just kidded but had lost her babies. I was hooked; I loved the goats’ personalities and Benny and I really enjoyed the delicious milk a. We then bought our first bottle kids who where Alpine/Nubian crosses. After acquiring a few more crosses, we started buying registered Alpines, then slowly adding registered Nubians. About this time the Boer craze started and we jumped into Boer goat business, learning about AI, embryo flushes and transplants, so of course we had to have the recept does added to the growing herd. Before we knew it we were up to about 130 goats while working full time jobs. The decision was made to just keep the dairy goats so we sold out of all the Boers. Still the numbers were too large so after several months we thinned out the recorded grades and the one Toggenburg. Soon the numbers increased again and we were not happy with the show quality or the milking records of the Alpines and Nubians that we owned. At this point a very good friend, Teresa Wade, told me that if I thinned down to just one breed and cut my numbers way down, she would help me obtain the quality dairy goat that we desired. It was a hard decision on which breed to cull but because the Alpines tended to be more aggressive to each other and because I just like the Nubians, we sold the Alpines in 2001 and 2002.
Without my knowledge, Benny had made arrangements with Teresa to purchase of a couple of kids. So in February of 2001 we flew to Washington to visit Hill’s Acres. We had a great time with Teresa and Don helping them build a picket fence (see picture below of mailbox and fence) and also traveling by boat to Victory Canada for a couple of days. We were very impressed with the quality of the Hill’s Acres girls and brought two kids home with us. Then in July we met them in Nebraska on their way to ADGA Nationals in Massachusetts, in order to add GCH Hill’s-Acres Beauquet and Old*Glory Lucky Raffle Winner to our herd. In July of 2002 we went to ADGA Nationals in Pueblo Colorado where Beauquet placed first place 4 year old milker and first place udder in that class of 40. Never in my wildest dreams did I ever think I would own such a beautiful doe and have Don and Teresa Wade to thank for it. I am ever grateful to them for selling Beauquet to us and for their great breeding program that produces such beautiful Nubians. They have worked very hard to produce such quality and that was proven by their huge wins at the 2002 ADGA Nationals. In 2003 we purchased the Hill’s Acres Herd from Don and Teresa Wade. It was a difficult decision for Don and Teresa to sell but because of a planned move Washington to Idaho and because of the long collection tours for Bio-Genics LTD (www.biogenics.com) they decided they could not maintain the herd so decided to sell. Benny and I are very thankful for the opportunity to add Hill’s Acres to our family of Nubians. Thank you again Don and Teresa. Included in the above purchase was the Hill’s Acres name. I was the owner listed for Green Gardens so Benny joined ADGA in 2002 as Hill’s Acres and that is why we are TWO HERDS, ONE FAMILY.
